Always Upside-down

I'm not sure what this third "prong" is on three prong plugs... but... how come every-time I go to plug something into the wall with out one of these little helpers... I always put the thing in UPSIDE-freegin-DOWN... does any one feel me on this? You know how one side is bigger than the other and it has to match up!? ERRR It's like someone has to be watching every-time I go to plus something in and then laughs hysterically at me on the other side of some one way mirror. More three prongs please!!!! ~Peez-outT

the third prong is actually a ground, but i agree... i'd like to think it was invented just so we can plug stuff in correctly the first time.

The ground wire goes to a metal rod inside your house that is connected to the earth. All grounds lead to here. The other end of the ground wire connects to the chassis of the object needing the current (i.e. a laptop or lamp). If the object is not grounded (or has two "prongs") and somehow a component or wire comes loose in the lamp and touches the metal chassis, the current is now flowing through the metal casing. This is a bad thing. If one were to now touch that metal casing, he or she would be electricuted because the body is like a huge resistor (If there's voltage and resistance, a current will flow...Ohm's Law...V=IR, or voltage equals current times resistence). But, if the lamp is grounded, this would not happen. The electricity coming from the exposed wire or component would flow through the chassis but would now be routed to the pole in the ground (because electricity follows the path of least resistence...and a metal pole is way less resistive than the human body) Man...that makes absolutely no sense after I just read it.
